Add to Technorati Favorites chick on a stick…

I’ve become the cliche of a blond living in SoCal; I ordered a surf board. A longboard in fact. With “camo” detailing.

Yes, I do advanced yoga but I’m particularly balance- and easy goin’- challenged. And I already wear a 1/2 wetsuit year-round in tropical places or at ‘the river’ because I’m always so darn cold.

Which makes this even MORE of a feat!

The (way) backstory: A few years ago, pics were posted of Jen Aniston and then Jen Garner (among other celebs) renting SUPs ( that’s “stand up paddleboards”) in Hawaii. Thought nothing of it. As a regular Hawaii-go’er, started to see more and more of it. And more. And then here in CA it seems to have exploded in the last 6mos. People that didn’t know what it was, and were similarly surf-challenged, now knew and were doing it. And buying boards. For the ocean.

One friend lost 20lbs. Another 10lbs. And still another lost 40lbs ( I think there was a little embellishing going on there ).

“Best workout ever.”

“You’ll cancel your gym membership.” (haha, not likely)

“Burns a TON of calories.” (Okay, wait a sec, whatchu say?! I’m IN)

The only thing that was holding me back was figuring out how to get out of the water w/o looking like a doofus who can’t surf (total poser). Worse yet, getting (another) head injury.

Problem solved.

Now, while I can’t say that I feel this tremendous sense of full-body “workingoutness” (which might be due, in part, to the fact I exercise 2-4hrs/day like a crazy person.) that everyone else raves about. But it’s finally (another) way for beachbabies like me to access the water. Year-round.

Here’s a forum for this activity: SUP
