Add to Technorati Favorites how shopping online might get more costly…

…if you live or shop in California!

Or, Hawaii.

Or North Carolina.

Or Maryland.

Or Rhode Island.

Or Minnesota.

Or Conneticut! (oh wait, they can afford it in Conneticut…haha)

“It’s not just about New York anymore. Several states are proposing legislation that could require certain advertisers to charge sales tax on Internet retail sales or tax via other means”

You’ve probably heard of a proposed internet tax. [Some businesses are already taxed on purchases bought online regardless of the proposed legislation.] To me, the cost of shipping goods (aka-clothes) bought online (& several e-tailers offer *free* regular shipping) offsets the cost of sales tax for purchasing in a brick & mortar retailer. Yes, you don’t get the instant gratification that comes with buying something at the mall, nor do you get to try things on for ‘fit’, but I can shop in my PJ’s at 11a.m., ahem, I mean 8 p.m. and it’s all good.

Everything is a trade-off. But California is just getting even more expensive WITHOUT the concomittent increase in benefits. Yes, we live by the ocean and have great shopping, but we do pay DEARLY for it in terms of higher taxes, more traffic, more crime, etc.

Most people that read the blog live in states other than the ones mentioned above, and many more are from different countries, so I realize some of you may have a ‘oh, quit your boo hoo-ing!’ sentiment. Just realize this– if the internet tax is successful in CA and NY, it will spread to other states.
