b/c there weren’t enough fun airport style pics this week. And it’s summer. And I’m inspired by recent postings from shopstyle and whowhatwear.
Let’s go TOP to BOTTOM, or head to toes, on discussing fit & stylish things to add to your packing list-be it for a day, or a week!!
- HAT- make it straw, floppy, or even a baseball cap…but if you still want to rock a cowboy hat, hey GO for it.
- SUNGLASSES- I like to bring a pair that is designated as a beach/pool pair. That way I won’t cry if it gets scratched up or heavily marred with sunscreen. Or stolen. If you collect sunglasses as I do, (send pics please!) this is important. You can also wear your pool sunglasses as a “surf tiara” to keep that hair back.
- SCARF- in addition to it’s obvious uses, if it’s long enough, you can use it as a bandeau top. It can dress up your cover-up outfit to take you into evening cocktails. You can tie back your hair with it.
- EARRINGS- here’s where you can go crazy with style because you won’t get tan lines. Make ‘em bold!
- NECKLACES- leather chains, shell necklaces, silver…piled on for effect. They look great but are not really functional for swimming or tanning.
- BRACELETS- pile ‘em on.
- COVER-UPs- make it a sundress (short or maxi), a ethnic inspired tunic top, a long surf logo sweatshirt, a sarong…
- SHOES- flip flops, slides, jellies, converse…
- BAG- for me, this is either a tote or a backpack. ScoopNYC’s shopping bags were made of water resistent nylon somethingorother and work great as well. [ as do Trader Joes! ] Take some plastic bags ( your hotel’s drycleaning bags already provided free* in the room are great for this) to put wet or oily things in. Plus another one to tote out your trash (or any other trash that you don’t think would be helpful for a marine animal to eat…please). If you’re going to the ocean, a backpack is nice because the different compartments allow you to seperate dry & wet items and the pack itself is less conspicuous (-& therefore less likely to shout to thiefs, “Hey! Stylish chick with cool items in this here bag!!”)
Other pieces that are suitable & versatile to bring include: headbands, denim cut off’s (D.I.Y. or otherwise), & a long(ish) blazer (to wear with your shorts/cut-offs or as a jacket over your cover-up dress),
HELP- What have I forgotten?
TIP- One of the most important things that I bring is a BANDANA! I’m not kidding. A bandana keeps the hair off your face (or sticking to your sunscreened face) and if you put a hat on over it, will keep the hatband from getting gross. If you go in the water, and ESPECIALLY in the ocean and if you snorkel, a bandana is essential for keeping the hair out of your face, from getting tangled in the mask straps (your snorkel strap goes over the bandana in back of your head!), or just tangled in general. ($2 purchase at Wal-Mart)
TIP- Take off your jewelry before heading into the water-be it pool or sea. Pool chlorine is not good for your embellishments. And for the ocean, not only do you risk the chance of something falling off never to be seen again (been there!), but you will also be seen as a giant lure by fish. Fish bite! And some fish are attracted to metallics and sting! (Been there and very painfully DONE that!)
I’m trying something new: posting a video instead of pics. [ Oops. Already see that I forgot some things; i.e., to show my scarf wraps that I bought at a grocery store (for cheapo!) and usually tie as a wrap skirt.] I wanted to make the video short so cut it off right at 3:33! And then it took 4 times that long to upload it. And an hour later, well… BEACH-Y KEEN VIDEO
