Add to Technorati Favorites Fit Chick Friday 10/30/09…

* I’m at a yoga workshop all weekend (including today). What are YOU doing for a better you this weekend?

* PT In Motion, pg 14, 10/09 - Being more physically active and adhering to a Mediterranean-type diet are both linked ot reduced risk of Alzheimer disease in a study in the August 12 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association. Unlike previous studies, this research explored the combined association of exercise and diet with risk of the disease. Resarchers noted that even low degrees of physical activity reported by the elderly participants seemed to be associated with having a protective effect against the disease. The diet was defined as having a high intake of fish, vegetables, legumes, fruits, cereals, and monounsaturated fatty acids; moderate alcohol consumption; and relatively low intake of dairy products, meats, and saturated fats.

* I’m trying to be more diverse, and yet healthy, with my vegan cooking. My friend gave me a spice today to add in my “dal” (Do you dal???) to aid indigestion (read: farts!) and is said to ward off illness (hello, H1N1!) -Asafoetida. Go get you some today to sprinkle on your food.

* Coconut oil. Use it. Love it. Good for you. (seriously) If you don’t believe me, Google it. Or ask me to cite more info.

* Excerpted from From O’ magazine, the ‘FIVE THINGS THAT CAUSE WEIGHT GAIN?’ or ‘Five Things You’d Never Think Would Make You Fat (But Guess What?):

carb-free liquor- Hard alcohol is inherently carb free. Beer and wine have some carbs (=sugar). The new lower carb versions, though, may have higher calories. At the end of the day, it’s all about the calories.

depo-provera- because of the increased progesterone. 70% of women gain weight on it.

artificial sweetners- these trick your body into eating more. And they’re sh*tty for you! Anyone reading this blog already knows that.

missing meals- (**raises hand**) Alright already. Those who eat breakfast weigh less than those who skip…blahblahblah…I’ll say this, if I eat well, especially lunch, I will eat less for dinner and generally consume over the whole day vs. having skipped or waited to eat (=FEAST) at dinner.

dining out - duh

* health is the new wealth! do you believe it??
