Add to Technorati Favorites Fit Chick Friday - 11/06/09 baby aspirin, BPA now what?, and another forty -something babe

* This is the first fit chick friday post for November. HAPPY NOVEMBER!

* This week I started taking 2 baby aspirin in the morning with a tall glass of room temperature water. This was preceeded by a Dr. Oz show in which he cited evidence that aspirin reduces the risk of stroke, heart attack and some cancers. It reduces inflammation in the body which is also good for those of us who worry about saving face. Particularly ours. Or the condition of the skin of ours, more likely! The aspirin should be the cheap (pink in color & chewable, yay!) version so that it will dissolve easily and not, as he described, be encoated to the point that it bullets itself into the lining of our GI tract.  Those of us old enough, and crazy enough, to be involved with extreme physical fitness know this a.m. routine as 2/3rds of our ECA stack. But I digress.

* My neighborhood massage center sent a newsletter that said there is “evidence that people who take saunas once or twice a week get half as many colds as those who don’t. Breathing in the saunas hot air may kill cold and flu viruses and relaxing in a sauna may reduce stress and improve sleep.” Plus, you should add some lemon juice to that green tea drink of yours to boost the antioxidant absorption by up to 80%!!

* Interval training is HOT for fat loss. A good sample circuit is 30 seconds “on” (or hard core) and 30 seconds “off” (less intensity, rest). For those that don’t like the treadmill, a stationary bicycle works just fine! (Provided that you don’t have knee problems that are aggrevated by bike riding….)

* Delightful dessert - Yes, I post pictures of cupcakes here from time to time. Yes, I eat cupcakes. I just don’t eat them every day. But at the other extreme, I don’t strive to be someone like Madonna who probably will never eat a cupcake for the rest of her life! (So sad!) It’s more than being “moderate”; it’s being “minimal”. Don’t strive for perfection but strive to be the best you can be for 95% of the time. I’ll tell you what will upset your body more and amy cause you to be predisposed to storing more fat…STRESSING ABOUT DESSERT. It increases cortisol. Relax. Enjoy. Give thanks. Drink water.

* Drink WATER

* A short while back, many fit chicks I know gave up plastic water bottles. Not because of the landfill mass they felt they were contributing to, after all they recycled, but because of the harmful plastic chemical residue they felt could possibly leech into the water and into their bodies. Then, oh the horror!, many of the reusable water thermoses (sp?? is that a word?! Thermi? hehe) were shown to contain BPA! BPA, otherwise known as Bisphenol, has now been found in canned foods like DelMonte & Green Giant canned vegetables and Progresso vegetable soups! Eating one of these can cause you to ingest up to 80 TIMES the safe amount. When at all possible, which is most of the time, don’t eat CANNED.

BPA is a component of plastic. High levels of it have been linked to heart disease, diabetes, breast cancer, prostate cancer, hyperactivity, obesity and liver failure. Even low doses can cause reproductive harm as it can mimic estrogen in our bodies.

Next week, if I remember, I’ll cite additional reports to prove to you that canned foods are bad. Just say, ‘No’.
