Pranayama is the fourth limb of ashtanga yoga, the eight-limbed path of classical yoga.

It is often translated as breath control, and a pranayama practice is based on various ways of lengthening, deepening, retaining and otherwise regulating the breath.
“Yama” translates as mastery or control, but “Prana” imples much more than breath.  Prana can mean “life” or “life force” and the idea of prana as breath is a subtle and physical manifestation of the life energy.  All living things are infused with prana—it is the animating principle that we all share….
The clear intention of pranayama is to bring that which is unconscious to consciousness.  One must bring the body and mind into a steady stillness in order to be able to observe ever refined shifts of breath and energy.  Through the practice of pranayama, simple breath  observation can be powerfully settling, as the breath grows spacious and subtle.   The mind learns to rest in the interplay of opposites, here illustrated and felt as inhales and exhales, and loosens its need to qualify, judge and separate.
Thus the yogic ideal of union is experienced fully, and we move from intellectual understanding and curiosity, to realized moments (however fleeting!) of luminosity.

  • For extra benefits, try to hold this pose for ONE MINUTE. After you’ve mastered that for a couple of weeks, try for TWO.

Here are plank exercise variations:

  • for beginners- on your knees, hands on a bench, hands on a wall…
  • for more advanced- on elbows, hands on therapy ball, feet on therapy ball, one leg lifted,…
  • other variations- hands a bit wider than shoulders with fingers turned slightly in; side plank: regular, with arm weights, with top leg lifted…
